Marriages

Marriage follows after a period of a few months generally from the acceptance of betrthal. Marriage is a very elaborate and extravagant affair: there are a number of rites, with a feast hosted at each occasion. The marriage festivity begins with mayun, followed by mehndi, then there is the barat and finally the walima. On the Barrat and Walima all the relatives even distant and friend are invited. The Mayun and Mehndi are more of a family affair, in which women participate. A large dowry, heavy gold ornaments and gifts for the parents and close relatives of groom are expected form the parents of the bride. Marriages are celebrated in a form that manifests the social status of both the families.
